What Professional Tile Installation Requires

Tile needs a stable, flat and properly prepared surface. The installer checks the substrate, plans the layout and confirms where cuts and grout lines will fall before setting the tile. The selected mortar, grout and preparation system must match the tile, room and substrate.

The $10.00 starting rate applies to standard floor tile installation. Demolition, disposal, waterproofing, uncoupling membranes, levelling, large-format tile, mosaics, diagonal patterns, heated-floor systems and wall or shower work can change the quote.

Removing Old Tile and Preparing the Surface

We can include removal of existing tile or another floor in the project scope. Tile demolition can expose cracks, loose sections, adhesive and uneven areas. These need correction before new tile is installed. Wet areas may also require an approved waterproofing system.

  • Remove furniture, fragile items and anything attached near the work area.
  • Discuss toilets, vanities and appliances before installation day.
  • Expect noise and dust during demolition, even when the crew uses dust-control methods.
  • Keep the room closed to children and pets until the setting materials reach the required cure time.

Choosing Tile Colour, Size and Finish

Large-format tiles can create a clean look with fewer grout lines, but the floor needs to meet tighter flatness requirements. Matte surfaces can provide more grip in wet areas. Polished tiles reflect light and show detail in marble-look patterns. Grout colour also changes the result: a close match creates a calm surface, while contrast outlines each tile.

Tile Installation Tips

  • Dry-plan the layout so narrow cuts do not collect along the most visible wall.
  • Order extra tile for cuts, breakage and future repairs. Patterns and diagonal layouts need more material.
  • Confirm the tile is rated for the intended floor or wet area.
  • Choose grout and transition colours before installation starts.
  • Respect the stated cure time before walking on the floor or returning appliances.

Tile Installation Questions

Can new tile be installed over old tile?

Sometimes, but the existing tile must be secure, flat and suitable for the approved bonding system. Removal often gives the installer a better view of the substrate and finished height.

Why does large-format tile cost more to install?

Large tile needs a flatter surface, careful handling, specialized cutting and close control of alignment. The site conditions and layout determine the final labour price.
