Laminate Flooring for Pets and Kids: AC4 vs. AC5 and What to Check

Original design concept of a family living room with warm oak-look laminate flooring and a golden retriever

Laminate flooring can work well in a home with dogs, children and busy hallways, provided you choose it for the room and check more than the AC rating. Compare abrasion resistance, separate scratch-performance information, the written water warranty and installation requirements. An AC5 label alone does not promise a scratch-proof or waterproof floor.

Start with the way your household uses the space. A bedroom with a small dog has different demands from a kitchen where water bowls spill and chairs move every day. Browse our laminate flooring collection with those habits in mind, then ask for the specifications of the exact colour and collection.

AC4 vs. AC5 laminate: what the number tells you

AC stands for Abrasion Class. It describes resistance to surface wear under the applicable test, rather than every kind of damage a floor might experience. ANSI’s summary of NALFA’s guidance explains that AC ratings come from the European EN13329 classification; NALFA’s North American standard uses a different framework.

When products are rated under the same system, AC5 represents a higher abrasion class than AC4. That can be useful information for a heavily used room, but it should not decide the purchase on its own. Ask whether the manufacturer approves the product for your intended use and what its residential warranty actually covers.

Four things to compare before buying

What to check for a busy family home
Your concernAsk forDo not assume
Foot traffic and surface wearPublished abrasion rating and intended-use classificationA higher AC number covers every type of damage
Dog claws and moving chairsScratch-test information and warranty exclusionsScratch-resistant means scratch-proof
Spills and pet bowlsWritten water-exposure limits and required edge detailsA water claim covers flooding or moisture underneath
Sound and movement underfootApproved underlay and subfloor preparation requirementsA thicker plank fixes an uneven subfloor

These are separate questions for a reason. NALFA’s standards resources distinguish abrasion wear, scratch testing and assembled-joint water performance. Check a product’s actual certification and test information rather than assuming every laminate has the same results.

For pets, look beyond the word “durable”

Picture your dog turning quickly at the hallway corner, a dining chair scraping after breakfast and grit carried in from outside. Those are different sources of wear. Keep pet claws maintained, remove loose grit regularly and fit suitable protectors beneath furniture. Even a resistant surface can be marked.

For example, Quick-Step’s care guidance notes that sand and debris can cause deeper scratches and recommends entrance mats and furniture protection. Follow the care instructions for the flooring you buy, including approved cleaners.

Read the water warranty before choosing kitchen flooring

Look for the permitted rooms, spill-cleanup requirements and installation details around walls, doorways and fixtures. Ask specifically about pet accidents and water bowls. A surface-water warranty may have conditions and exclusions that matter more to your household than the headline wording.

Clean spills promptly and use a suitable tray beneath a pet bowl. If water regularly sits on the floor, discuss that exposure before ordering. Do not treat a water-resistant surface as a repair for a damp subfloor or a plumbing problem.

Choose a finish you will enjoy living with

The EPLF’s 2026 design outlook, published December 12, 2025, highlights natural wood looks, warm neutral colours and matte finishes. Those are useful starting points for sample shopping, rather than a reason to choose a floor that does not suit your rooms.

Compare samples beside your cabinets and furniture in both daylight and evening light. Look at several planks together so you can judge grain variation and pattern repetition. For a Toronto family room or a Vaughan hallway, the right colour should connect comfortably with the adjoining spaces.

Installation matters as much as the label

Before installation, confirm subfloor moisture and flatness requirements, the approved underlay, expansion space and doorway transitions. Do not add a second pad beneath a product with an attached pad unless the manufacturer permits it. Our laminate installation service explains the preparation and finishing work to discuss.

For a GTA condo, obtain the building’s flooring approval and acoustic requirements before purchasing. For any project, use the installation calculator as a planning starting point and confirm preparation, removal and trim in the final quote.

Questions homeowners ask

Is AC5 laminate scratch-proof?

No. AC is an abrasion classification, not a guarantee against claws, grit or dragged furniture. Compare separate scratch information and the warranty.

Is thicker laminate always better for dogs?

Thickness alone does not establish scratch or water resistance. Compare the surface performance, locking system, installation requirements and warranty of each product.

Can laminate go in a kitchen with a pet water bowl?

Only choose a product approved for that room and exposure, installed according to its instructions. Confirm water-warranty conditions, use a suitable bowl tray and clean spills promptly.

Bring the room details, not just a colour name
